Juan José Cañas Gutiérrez

Juan José Cañas Gutiérrez (born 17 April 1972 in Rota, Cádiz, Andalusia) is a retired Spanish footballer who played as a midfielder, in a career intimately connected with Betis.

Football career

Cañas played for Real Betis from 1994–2006, appearing in 228 first division games with 10 goals, his first appearance coming on September 4, 1994, in a 0–0 draw at CD Logroñés - previously, the player amassed a total of 53 first-team matches in three seasons combined, as the Andalusians were in Segunda División. The highlight of his lengthy career was lifting the Spanish Cup in 2005, as he was always team captain when playing.

Also in that season, as he approached the end of his playing time, Cañas still managed 24 league appearances, helping Betis to a fourth place in the league, good enough for UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds.

From 2006–08, Cañas appeared for lowly CD Alcalá, retiring at 36.
